We bought our house a little over a year ago and have been making it our home ever since.
We graduated college, got new jobs, and started the adventure of home buying all in one month. Overwhelmed? Maybe. Excited? Very!
The housing market was a seller’s market, and houses were going and gone before we could even get a chance to view them. Thankfully, we were able to view four in one day, with the final home being the one we took the keys to. We liked the house, loved the neighborhood and were ready to turn both into a place that was OURS. I always joke that 3 days into homeownership we were taking down walls, and it’s actually not a joke. Open concept, that was the key to Brandon’s heart, and what this house didn’t have, we planned to give it!
Home remodels are fun, but stressful! I can’t tell you the amount of times I lost it because we didn’t have kitchen countertops or because the trim was taking so long to paint (insider fact: don’t look behind the couch or you may see cream trim instead of white… that’s on the to do list, someday). We did everything ourselves (minus plumbing and electrical) and that makes this home all of the more ours!
But, after all is said and done, we turned this house into a home and were able to make it ours. The biggest tip I have is to not wait on your dream plans, don’t wait until you’re ready to sell to do the upgrades, do it now and enjoy it while YOU get to live in it. We are still changing things as we see fit, but our house will change, our family will grow, and this will always be our very first home.
Our favorite store during the remodel was Home Depot, and our favorite places for furniture and decor were/are; Tj Maxx & Homegoods, Target, Pier 1, Furniture Mart, & World Market! If you see any pieces you want specific details on – leave me a comment and I’d be happy to share!
Love, M.
